New lease of life for a chalet bungalow

This tired property now offers modern family living with fantastic views in historic Appledore

This mid-late c20th chalet bungalow sits within a broad plot in North Devon’s historic and picturesque fishing village of Appledore. Sited just outside the local conservation area, the bungalow required much attention both internally and externally if we were to fulfil the client’s brief of forming a modern, open plan family home. Whilst creating light and bright spaces, and giving the tired exterior an overhaul were key points to the brief, it was also crucial to factor in the property’s location in terms of neighbouring residences, and be sure to approach any issues of overlooking with awareness and sensitivity.

We used elegant and modern forms which worked together to unify the current disjointed massing of the dwelling. Internally the space has been reconfigured, incorporating an existing self contained annex into the dwelling to create one family space without losing any bedrooms. Widening the hallway not only allowed for better storage areas but opens up the house, allowing a view through the space and out into the rear garden and providing an informal sitting area with doors out onto the rear garden.

Two en-suite bedrooms have glazed double doors leading out onto the garden. Centrally, a new staircase leads up into the open plan living area. To the front a sitting area is located, with views out over the estuary and a log burner. A dining area sits centrally, and to the rear a kitchen with an island and breakfast bar is situated. Double doors lead out from the kitchen area to the rear garden and decking area.
