Interiors viewpoint: Autumn inspiration for your home

Following the ‘spring clean’, comes the autumn make over and even though most UK dwellers feel they were cheated of any meaningful summer this year, 2023’s autumn season is well and truly here. So, before we all get thoroughly sad at the prospect of an impending winter around the corner, let’s take a look at how the wonderful colours, textures and ambience we find around us during this ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ can help bring the essence of autumn into your home.

The autumn colour palette
Despite the floral grandeur of spring and summer, there’s something quite special about autumn’s colour palette, with the landscape shifting from bright green pastures to the rich hues of the changing leaves. As the nights begin to draw in and we find ourselves spending more time in our homes, it makes for the perfect excuse for a home revamp - time to pick up a paint brush and make the most of the warm and earthy tones of autumn.

Rustic materials
Incorporating natural materials like reclaimed or antique wooden furniture and stone countertops will create a connection to the outdoors and can add warmth, character and authenticity to your space. Sourcing these pieces, can also make for the perfect rainy day activity, where you’ll find yourself lost in an antiques warehouse wondering around centuries of stories hidden within furniture.

Autumn textures
A variety of textures can be used to mimic the sensory experience of autumn - look for fabrics with cable knit or herringbone in rich autumnal colours. Natural fibres like cashmere, wool, cotton and jute work well when used for upholstery and throws alongside plush fabrics such as velvet to create a sense of comfort and luxury reminiscent of cosy autumn evenings.

Seasonal décor
From table centerpieces and seasonal wreaths to vases around the home or a full on ‘tablescape’, autumn is a season abundant with natural materials perfect for home decoration.  The abundance of pine cones, acorns, twigs and dried leaves makes for easy foraging this time of year. Mix them with fresh or dried autumn flowers and foliage like sunflowers and eucalyptus for a winning combination and authentic seasonal ambience.

Autumnal scents
Autumn time is filled with many evocative scents that are easily replicated inside the home. Using candles and diffusers with spiced scents such as cinnamon, apple spice and pumpkin will really add a seasonal touch to the home, bringing autumn to any interior space.
