Coastal Hotel

South Devon sympathetic Georgian renovation.

We believe the soul of a historic building is found not only in its façade, but in the quiet poetry of its interiors — in the proportions, materials, and unexpected moments that reveal themselves as one moves through the space. Our renovation of a Georgian hotel in South Devon offered a rare opportunity to reanimate such a setting: to craft interiors that respectfully echo the building’s heritage while delivering a contemporary, luxurious guest experience.

From the outset, our approach centred on uncovering and reinstating the building’s original elegance. Working meticulously room by room, we stripped back decades of unsympathetic alterations to reveal surviving period features — from delicate cornices to timber panelling. Where these elements remained, they were carefully restored; where they had been lost, we reimagined them through bespoke detailing, maintaining a continuity of language between past and present.

Guest experience informed every decision. We reconfigured internal layouts to create more generous suites, enhancing natural flow and refined spatial hierarchies without compromising the integrity of the historic fabric. Each room was conceived as a distinct expression within a unified whole, with soft, heritage-inspired palettes layered against contemporary finishes — brushed brass, clay plaster, and honed marble — to create spaces that feel at once grounded and elevated.

Natural light became a guiding principle. Original Georgian windows were restored and celebrated; where alterations had disrupted the building’s rhythm, we reinstated or sensitively re-proportioned openings to rebalance light and symmetry. Modern comforts — underfloor heating, bespoke joinery, acoustic upgrades — were discreetly integrated to ensure an exceptional guest experience, delivered with subtlety and restraint.

The public rooms — including the lounge, bar, and dining areas — were reconceived as elegant, sociable spaces that merge period character with quiet modernity. Restored stone pillars and tiled floors provide a robust architectural framework, softened by layered lighting and tactile furnishings curated for depth and warmth.

This project was never simply about refurbishment. It was about reawakening the building’s interior identity — allowing its original spirit to emerge anew, reinterpreted with care, clarity, and timelessness.
