Hand crafted modern extension to Appledore home

Bespoke timber clad modern extension

OCR Architecture is always pleased to work on projects along the North Devon coast, so we were thrilled to be able to develop a design to provide a well crafted extension to a small property in Appledore.

The extension is a two-storey timber clad box with vertical laid Larch cladding, providing detail to the elevation of the new timber extension. The extension links back via a double height glazed stair to the original house.

The original house was a three story Victorian property that had a very small footprint therefore not providing the living space or bedrooms that the new owner required. The original house had a lean-to extension was poorly constructed and had limited head height which did not connect with the views back to the estuary.

OCR Architecture's brief was to develop a design that created the additional living space that was required, but critically also provided a connection both with the gardens and the wider estuary.

The contemporary nature of the design was driven to ensure that the home did not become a pastiche by adding a more traditional structure it’s also reflected the client aspiration for creating an elegant crafted home.

Working with a local construction firm Kingston construction the design was developed to ensure buildability on what was a restricted access site.

The design looked to marry an interior concept reflecting a coastal Scandinavian inspired interior which was felt to be suitable to the site and the outdoor lifestyle that the homeowner wished to pursue
