As the Design Manager, OCR Architecture sat as part of the Mace team to assess, analyse, and review the design information being provided to the team, helping ensure technical compliance and assess buildability along with the principal contractor for all information submitted.

AHR describe the project as;

The new living accommodation reinvigorates and enlivens the area, including new retail provision at street level alongside improved public realm. A new central courtyard provides extensive amenity facilities to support the living accommodation. The 601 units in Phase 1 comprises a mix of studio rooms, cluster rooms, duplexes and large studio penthouses. Communal kitchen and living areas will be provided in each cluster, whilst the studio rooms will each have their own kitchenette. Further student amenity spaces include quiet study zones, sociable communal kitchens, and a private dining area.

The building’s city centre location allows students easy access to the university campuses. Both pedestrian and cycle routes will be integrated into the site, linking to the city's new cycle route that passes alongside and promotes students to travel by bike to their places of study.

The development takes inspiration from adjacent residential areas, the site’s past and the topography of Exeter. These influences combine to produce a building that will be a dynamic, interesting and positive addition to the skyline.

The design is based upon initial proposals by MAKE.

AHR has designed Phase 2 that completes the courtyard development and provides a further 114 rooms and additional retail and amenity space.
