Sustainable contemporary new home

A modern redesign for enhanced beachside living

The existing mid-to-late c20th chalet bungalow on this site suffered greatly with a long list of maintenance issues, did not utilise the plot it sat on and was highly thermally inefficient so our clients engaged with us to create a replacement dwelling.

We sought to maximise the potential of the plot, enhance connections to the garden and frame the stunning coastal views with the following key objectives:

  • Sustainability: Use of high-quality natural materials that reflect
the street's muted palette in a contemporary and refined manner.
  • Contemporary Aesthetic: A modern, clean design with an emphasis
on open plan living, with improved landscaping and high-quality finishes.
  • Thermal Efficiency: A focus on creating a thermally efficient home.

We utilised the site’s topography to add an additional floor whilst maintaining a low profile from the front elevation. This increased the dwelling size from three to four bedrooms with minimal impact visually. The lower ground floor accommodates three double bedrooms, two ensuite, and a family bathroom all with glazed doors opening onto a terraced area.

Upstairs focussed on a spacious open plan living, kitchen and dining area flooded with natural light that made the most of the spectacular prevailing beachscape.

Outside, terraced spaces and level changes improved the integration of house and garden whilst incorporating bio-diverse planting beds that also function as retaining walls for the terraced areas all contribute to a net gain in biodiversity. Using permeable paving and decking for the terraced areas managed water run-off and reduced environmental impact.
