House extension in Budleigh Salterton, East Devon

Sympathetic extension and thoughtful re-modelling of an existing home allows improved living flow for a young, local family

Our client purchased this property as they wished to move back to the town they grew up in and where their family still live. Requiring extensive renovation and updating, this property nonetheless represented the perfect opportunity to create a beautiful family home and put down some long term roots.

Although well proportioned, the house suffered from low levels of natural daylight and damp. In addition the living spaces to the ground floor were poorly connected and did not suit the current needs and aspirations of the family. As such the clients were looking to create an extension

to provide the opportunity to reconfigure the ground floor layout and introduce larger openings and an additional bathroom upstairs.

We approached design with the aim of balancing a sympathetic renovation of a period building with the practical needs of light and space. We developed a modest double storey extension to the southern elevation which provided the additional floor space required to re arrange the internal elements of the ground floor. This extension enabled an open plan space to be created suitable for modern family needs, and ensure that good levels of visibility are created within the house to ensure the children’s safety. The proposed ground floor extension included areas of single storey glazing to increase the amount of natural light and ventilation into the building.

On the first floor the additional floor area enabled two of the existing three bedrooms, which were slightly compromised, to be remodelled to create useable double bedrooms and an additional bathroom on the first floor.
