RHS Rosemoor Visitor Centre

With the increased popularity of this tourist site came the need to develop the principal building to enable better access for visitors, and better use of the space. There was also a desire as part of continued investment in the site to develop an enhanced F&B offering; creating a destination restaurant and improved cafe space.

Following on from the analysis of the existing building, and identification of a series of bottlenecks in the flow through the building, an assessment of potential areas for development was undertaken.  This process identified that the courtyard to the rear of the main building (facing the garden) was underutilised and would provide the ability for a larger entrance area to be created, helping to ease the pressure on the current small lobby.

In addition to infilling to the rear of the building the proposal looked to create a small projecting lobby to the front. This will help guide visitors to the entrance and provide better wayfinding from the car parking area. The design of this lobby is also intended to stop a 'wind tunnel' effect that currently exists and enters into the shop.

A further extension to the south of the current restaurant area enabled an increased number of covers, fulfilling the ambition to expand and improve catering options.
